What I feel strongly about now is that racism is a crime. It isn’t generally seen as crime, even though it’s there in UK law; so few people get prosecuted, and anyway we have prime ministers and other politicians who are racist and get away with it. So we’re supposed to brush racism off: that English playground chant, ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me’ – whoever made up that rhyme was white. For those who grew up with words about our skin colour hurled at us by children, and adults, the hurt lingers. Racism is bullying, and both are a fundamental part of British life, like its empire, and the ongoing myth of so-called British values of tolerance. Tolerance …
